چکیده

Diffuse far-ultraviolet (FUV: 1370–1670 Å) flux from the Taurus molecular cloud region has been observed with the SPEAR/FIMS imaging spectrograph. An FUV continuum map of the Taurus region, similar to the visual extinction maps, shows a distinct cloud core and halo region. The dense cloud core, where the visual extinction is Av > 1.5, obscures the background diffuse FUV radiation, while a scattered FUV radiation is seen in and beyond the halo region where Av < 1.5. The total intensity of H2 fluorescence in the cloud halo is IH2 = 6.5 ×10 4 photons cm s sr in the 1370–1670 Å wavelength band. A synthetic model of the H2 fluorescent emission fits the present observation best with a hydrogen density nH = 50 cm , H2 column density N(H2) = 0.8 ×10 cm, and an incident FUV intensity IUV = 0.2. H2 fluorescence is not seen in the core presumably because the required radiation flux to induce fluorescence is unable to penetrate the core region. Ultraviolet-selected Field and Pre-main-sequence Stars toward Taurus and Upper Scorpius

We have carried out a Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Cycle 1 guest investigator program covering 56 deg2 near the Taurus T association and 12 deg2 along the northern edge of the Upper Scorpius OB association. We combined photometry in the GALEX far-ultraviolet and near-ultraviolet bands with data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey to identify candidate young ( 100 Myr old) stars as those wit...

Intense Diffuse Far-ultraviolet Emission from the Orion Nebula

We present spectra of the diffuse far-UV (900–1200 ) emission from a region near the Orion Nebula: the Å first high-resolution spectra of the diffuse background radiation. These observations were made using serendipitous Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations and were only possible because of the strength of the diffuse emission (≈ photons cm 2 sr 1 s 1 ) and the sensitivity...

Measurements of the Diffuse Ultraviolet Background and the Terrestrial Airglow with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph1

Far-UV observations in and near the Hubble Deep Fields demonstrate that the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) can potentially obtain unique and precise measurements of the diffuse far-ultraviolet background. Although STIS is not the ideal instrument for such measurements, high-resolution images allow Galactic and extragalactic objects to be masked to very faint magnitudes, thus ensuri...

VLBA determination of the distance to nearby star-forming regions III. HP Tau/G2 and the three-dimensional structure of Taurus

Using multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array observations, we have measured the trigonometric parallax of the weak-line T Tauri star HP Tau/G2 in Taurus. The best fit yields a distance of 161.2 ± 0.9 pc, suggesting that the eastern portion of Taurus (where HP Tau/G2 is located) corresponds to the far side of the complex. Previous VLBA observations have shown that T Tau, to the South of the comple...

Spectral Observations of Diffuse FUV Emission from the Hot Phase of the Interstellar Medium with DUVE ( the Diffuse Ultraviolet Experiment )

One of the keys to interpreting the character and evolution of interstellar matter in the galaxy is understanding the distribution of the low density hot (10 5 K − 10 6 K) phase of the interstellar medium (ISM). This phase is much more difficult to observe than the cooler high density components of the ISM because of its low density and lack of easily observable tracers. Because gas of this tem...
